About the Speaker

Woko J. Aguru, a Nigerian painter and sculptor, has had a lifelong passion for art. Starting with replicating drawings and playing with sandy ground as a child, Aguru later studied sculpture at the University of Port Harcourt. Since graduating in 2000, he has consistently pursued his artistic practice.

Aguru's artwork has evolved over the years, transitioning from traditional painting pigments to incorporating waste products and found objects. He now focuses on using recycled industrial materials like wine corks, soda cans, and polystyrene. His love for these materials reflects his desire to reappropriate and reconfigure.

Combining form, design, waste, and beauty, Aguru's work showcases African motifs alongside imported consumables. Influenced by classical African masks, his sculptures possess an antique appearance, while his paintings prompt contemplation on material culture. Through his art, he draws inspiration from the past while addressing contemporary issues.

Aguru has participated in various exhibitions, including solo and group shows, showcasing his talent and creativity. Additionally, he has been involved in public projects, designing and building structures for events and monuments. His contributions to the art industry extend to pioneering the Rivers State Indigenous Visual Artists and serving as its president.

With his wide-ranging appeal, Aguru's artwork is sought after and can be found in public and private collections both locally and internationally.
