    Contemporary Artist and Architect

    Ibim Cookey (b. 1999) is a Multi award winning Contemporary Artist and Architect, born in Port harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Architecture From the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu state. He is an Art Ambassador for the Rivers state Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Ibim Cookey is a recipient of several prestigious awards which include (but are not limited to): Nigerian Teen Choice Award (2017), Special recognition award for Creativity Nigerian Festival of Awards (2018), Artistic personality of the year Nigeria Hype Awards (2019). His artworks have been featured at exhibitions and art fairs in Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil, France,England,Greece, Germany, Hong Kong,etc. As a young boy, Ibim began drawing and through the years, developed his distinctive detailed photorealistic drawing style. For his portraits, Cookey prefers graphic and charcoal pencils, which he combines with designs of specific African fabrics. The intensely colored textile patterns contrast with his black and white drawings and are symbolic of the connection between the identity and culture of the people the artist encounters on a daily basis. The acrylic painted backgrounds in the style of West African wax printed fabrics take a central role in Cookey's paintings, as they are an expression of self-confidence and pride in the people of the Niger Delta's own cultural roots.
